Thatcher Harrison is a guitarist and composer. As a guitarist, he plays everything from classical guitar to jazz guitar, to fingerstyle guitar, to popular/rock guitar. As a composer, he deftly combines influences from many genres of music to create pieces that satisfy both the heart and the mind.
An accomplished competitor, Thatcher Harrison has won 19 prizes in regional, national, and international music competitions, most notably 1st Prize at the 2021 Pleven Guitar Festival Fingerstyle Guitar Competition (Adult Division) 1st Prize at the 2020 Boston Guitarfest Online Academy Competition, 1st Prize at the 2020 Atlanta Festival Guitar Competition (Senior Division), 1st Prize at the 2019 Domaine Forget Guitar Competition (17-and-under Division), and being a winner of the 2019 National YoungArts Foundation Competition (Classical Music Division). Thatcher has performed in notable concert halls, including Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Jordan Hall, Symphony Hall, Domaine Forget Concert Hall, and the Baryshnikov Arts Center. Thatcher also performed on Episode #376 of NPR’s From The Top in 2019. Thatcher has also completed several commissions as a composer.
In an attempt to separate himself from the other outstanding young guitarists of his generation, Thatcher performs unconventional and daring programs in competitions and concerts, oftentimes consisting primarily of his own compositions. Most recently in competition, Thatcher performed an all-original program in the final round of the 2021 Memphis International Guitar Competition. And, in his winner’s concert at the 2021 Boston Guitarfest, he will perform an all-original program that incorporates influences of jazz music, fingerstyle guitar music, pop/rock music, and world music into classical music performance techniques and composition forms.
Thatcher is currently studying for his Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance at New England Conservatory with Eliot Fisk and Jérôme Mouffe, and he also studies privately with flamenco virtuoso Grisha Goryachev and classical guitar virtuoso Scott Borg. Prior to attending NEC, Thatcher studied with William Riley.
